The county government of Siaya has disbursed Sh62 million towards bursaries.
According to the County Education Executive Rosenell Odondi, the released funds were disbursed for utilization in 732 learning institutions across the county. The disbursement is a huge relief as it will benefit 7,500 students.
The Education CEC said the county government has released a list of form one students who have been identified to also benefit from the bursaries.
Those targeted by the disbursement include form two and form four students, those in special schools and in tertiary institutions.
Odondi asked those who were considered for the support to visit their respective ward offices to access list of beneficiaries.
“Heads of the institutions have been notified and a list of students forwarded to them for verification,” she noted.
According to the CEC, the delay to disburse the bursaries for the 2020/21 financial year was occasioned by a technical hitch in the budget making process.
The Assembly unanimously approved the county’s Sh8.1 billion programme based budget estimates for the Financial Year 2021/2022 in June.
However, a standoff between the assembly and the executive over unexplained rollover projects and failure by the executive to remit statutory deductions delayed approval of the appropriation bill by the MCA.
This affected various departments, including education that could not process the bursaries in time.
County workers went without the July and August salaries due to the budget making hitch.
