Stakeholders urged to establish teenage rehabilitation centers

By Tony Wafula

Stakeholders have been asked to establish teenage rehabilitation centers where all teenage mothers can converge and get guidance and counseling services.

The centers should be equipped with youth friendly services and should give room to school dropouts to proceed with their education.

Dr. Leonidah Makila, a psychologist and a part time lecturer at Kibabii University, said that teen mothers should be given a chance to proceed with their education and not be stigmatized.

She expressed concern on the spiking number of teenage mothers in Bungoma and Busia counties   whom she said lack basic love and guidance and counseling.

Dr. Makila faulted politicians for neglecting to empower youths with skills and funds to sustain them.

She asked NG-CDF committee to allocate funds to teenage rehabilitation centres.

Dr. Makila, who is also the chairperson of County Education board, said that sporting activities should be resumed in schools to help students nurture and develop their talents.

She attributed the increase in sexual activities and bad behavior in schools to idleness and aggressiveness due to lack of sporting events.

Makila urged the clergy to come with mentorship programs aimed at safeguarding the interest of teenagers so that we save the future generations.
