Heristone Wanyonyi emerged the winner of the recently concluded Under 20 championship 10,000 m walking race held at Kasarani.

The second born in a family of five started engaging in the sport on his way to school at a young age so as not to be late for classes.

His games teacher at Psigirio primary school discovered his talent in the sport while he was in class seven and helped him nurture it. Through the training he received from Mr Wesley Mosop, he won all the competitions from zonal to county levels.

At Ortum high school, the sports teacher Mr Moti continued to sharpen his skills and he won several athletics competitions.

“My goal is to win the Common Wealth Games in 2022 and the world under 20 championships to be held in Colombia”, Heristone said who is currently being trained by Gabriel Otwane.

Heristone who sat for his KCSE exams last year has no hopes of joining university.

‘Educating my children is a nightmare’ Heristone’s father Wycliffe Masinde said.

Mr. Masinde is a local bricks maker in the village while his wife is a house wife.
