Schools within Matete sub county, Kakamega county are putting in place strict measures to curb cases of insecurity in the region.
Sub county director of education Tom Oluoch directed schools within his sub county to install alarm systems and closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras as part of enhancing surveillance in institutions.
This comes after cases of theft and the murder of security officers rocked airwaves last term. Kivaywa secondary school being the most hit after unknown assailants broke into the school and stole a TV set. In yet another incident, three security guards were killed on the spot.
The ministry of education had put in place measures to curb such incidences after cases of school fires became rampant and made it a necessity for each school to put up proper security measures including the installation of hidden cameras.
“Schools that can’t afford CCTV cameras can start by installing alarm systems that will alert the school management, security and the locals in case of any intrusion. The schools should also employ qualified company security personnel whom their employer will be held culpable in case of theft and burglary at the schools. ’Oluoch said.
The director also pointed out that some students were involved in theft at school where they steal from fellow students and sell them to the local brewers who in turn supply them with drugs and alcohol.
He warned that the 300 metres radius rule that does not allow bars and local brew dens within the schools will be enforced and stern action will be taken against those found to be conducting business within the prohibited radius.
He also warned security guards who collude with thieves to desist from such behavior as they will be easily nabbed once the suggested measures have been put in place.
He urged the staff and students to keep vigil and raise alarm whenever they sense or see something out of the ordinary.
