Girls rescued from early marriages in Kwale

By Collins Akong’o

At least 10 girls in Kwale County aged between seven and 17 years were recently rescued from getting married.

According to Sauti ya Wanawake, a human rights organization based in the coastal region with its head office in Mombasa County, the girls who were rescued from forced marriages were later enrolled back to school.

The organization says that most of the girls were forced to get married by their parents or guardians while others were forced to get married due to early pregnancies.

Sauti ya Wanawake’s statistics show that 60 per cent of girls in Kwale County have been sexually molested, circumcised or forced to get married at tender ages.

Child marriages still remain common in different parts of the country; it is however illegal since the Children’s Act became law in 2001.
