Some 37, 328 candidates in Meru County are sitting for this year Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
This will be the highest number of candidates ever registered in the county since 2018.
Public schools top the list of candidates with 32, 220 learners sitting for the exams while private schools have 5108 candidates.
In 2018 Meru had 34485 KCPE candidates while in 2019 the region had 35,209 KCPE candidates.
Speaking in Meru when he supervised the distribution of exams, Meru Director of Education Milton Nzioka said the increase of the candidates is as a result of two new schools that registered for the exams.
Nzioka noted that no school missed the exam papers including the newly enrolled schools.
We have started well and no school has missed the exams including the schools sitting for the exam for the first time,” Nzioka said.
He however noted that some schools had less than 15 candidates and were merged up with other neighboring schools.
The director of education said that every candidate will sit for the exams including those pregnant.
“We have made arrangements and communicated so that candidates who gave birth could be allowed to sit for the exams. They will all do the exams and those in hospital arrangements will be made for them to sit for their exams so that we can achieve the 100 per cent transition,” Nzioka said.
