Children from Boni Community are this year sitting for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams after a hiatus of seven years occasioned by persistent bandit attacks in the area.

About 3,348 candidates are currently doing the exams in various schools within the Boni Forest that were closed in 2014.

Lamu County Education Director Joshua Kaaga confirmed that the candidates had been sitting the exams under tight security as all arrangements had been put in place in the terror prone region.

‘’All the candidates from the terror prone areas sat their exams at Mokowe Arid Learning zone which was established in 1992 to rescue children from the minority Boni, Orma and Sanye communities.

The Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said they had put in place measures to enhance security as most of the security personnel had been deployed in areas along the border with Somalia.

He said to enhance security and protect exam leakage, no exam centre manager and others managing the examsare allowed to leave the centre without police escort.
