Five Kenya Forest Service (KFS) rangers have been arraigned in Eldama Ravine court in connection with the alleged murder of 19-year old Form 3 student Stephen Mwangi.
The student succumbed to multiple injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on Monday at Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The five officers Zipporah Chepkurui, Charles Korir, Simon Njoroge, Stanley Njoroge and Francis Lemiso, who appeared before Senior Magistrate Richard Koech, did not take plea due to security concerns.
The Senior Magistrate ordered transfer of the embattled officers to Mogotio Police Station where they will take their plea.
Locals led by Maji Mazuri Ward Member of County Assembly Solomon Kuria yesterday staged demonstrations in Maji Mazuri town demanding justice for Mwangi, a student at Maji Mazuri Secondary School who was brutally attacked by the rangers while defending his mother from being arrested.
Professionals led by Wycliffe Kipsang, an aspirant for Baringo Senatorial seat, urged the authorities to speed up investigations and ensure those connected to the death of the innocent student face the consequences.
KFS, through its official social media handle, flagged the assault complaint that occurred on 8 May 14, 2024 and promised to get to the bottom of the matter, saying investigations had begun at the nearby police station.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya had earlier regretted the incident, saying investigations were underway by relevant authorities to bring justice for the murdered student.
