A total of 3,654 Heads of Institutions for taechers training colleges, secondary and primary schools have been appointed by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in the last three years where in the three categories; tertiary institutions received a total of 11 heads of institutions while secondary and primary schools took 554 and 3,149 respectively.
TSC also appointed 18,585 teachers alongside the 3,654 Heads of Institutions in the last three years; 7,888 being absorbed in the 2018/2019 period, 5,166 in 2019/2020 and 5,531 teachers in 2020/2021 fiscal year.
At the same time, a total of 22, 239 teachers including newly employed teachers and Head of Institutions underwent Induction, Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC) programme initiated by TSC.
“The Commission, in its Strategic Plan 2019 -2023, committed to implement mentorship and coaching as a preventive strategy that pre-empts indiscipline amongst teachers rather than corrective mechanisms in management of discipline,” stated Dr. Macharia in the policy document.
Recently at Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) annual conference that was held at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa in April, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, urged TSC to review its promotion policy for school administrators.
“We wish to encourage that this policy be reviewed so that fairness in determining promotions is done locally in devolved units. Indicators of forced promotions have recently been seen in the manner and way in which unrests in schools were witnessed,” said Oyuu.
Currently in the country, there are 341,760 active teachers employed by TSC while 170,000 are in the private sector teaching in private institutions and another 238,686 are registered by the commission but are yet to be absorbed either in the private sector or in government.
