256 students from Narok County are set to benefit from the Ministry of Education’s Elimu Scholarship programme.

The County Programme Coordinator Christopher Keya said that the beneficiaries include 139 girls and 117 boys selected from vulnerable and poor backgrounds.

“In addition to school fees, the beneficiaries will get free shopping, uniform, pocket money and transport for the four years in secondary,” he said.

Keya said that they prioritized learners from marginalized areas such as Ogiek and persons living with disabilities who had attained at least 250 marks.

“We had to ensure that we visited every family to confirm the level of poverty and vulnerability. It was our biggest challenge as some homes were in very remote areas,” he said.

County Commissioner Isaac Masinde urged parents to ensure they enroll all their children who sat for KCPE exams to secondary schools, including expectant girls.

He encouraged students in the area to concentrate on their studies so as to improve the living standards of their parents and the community at large.

Narok South, Narok West and Trans Mara East sub-counties got the highest allocation of 50, 44 and 40 beneficiaries respectively while Narok North sub-county got the lowest number of beneficiaries standing at 19.
