Seventeen students from Mombasa County have been awarded full university scholarships to study courses of their choice in Indonesia.
The scholarship programme is funded by Indonesia AID through the Indonesian Embassy and selects potential candidates from the country through a competitive selection criterion.
Speaking during the awarding ceremony in Kizingo, Indonesian Ambassador to Kenya Witjaksono Adji said that Mombasa County has demonstrated immense support and guidance particularly to the education sector.
“This impressive achievement has been made possible thanks to the active support by the County Government of Mombasa through strong recommendation and guidance to the applicants,” said Amb. Adji.
He added that, last year there were nineteen awardees in the country, with only four coming from Mombasa. The significant rise in awardees to the programme this year is indicative of the commitment and priority the County administration has anchored on Education.
“This is exactly the vision of the Indonesian Agency for International development when it launched the programme in 2024 to support Governments across 25 partner countries in developing their human resources for advancement,” added Amb. Adji.

Amb. Adji also lauded the programme, saying it carries a wider significance, terming it as an invaluable link between the people of Kenya and Indonesia.
“Such ventures strengthen our people-to-people connection, serving as a bridge between our two nations and deepening mutual understanding,” said Amb. Adji.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir congratulated the awardees and assured them of his administration’s support.
Governor Nassir also hinted at the possibility of expanding the programme to accommodate more students in future given the success it has shown over the last year.
“Be good ambassadors of Mombasa and our nation when undertaking your studies abroad. This will be good leverage for us to be able to increase these opportunities even further,” said Governor Nassir.
Grace Magiri, a beneficiary going to pursue nursing, said she welcomes the opportunity as she has been passionate about medical studies since her childhood.
“I have always wanted to study nursing, and this scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for me to make my family proud,” said Magiri.
