10 TVET colleges qualify to second stage of Mechatronics competition

Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Masinga TVC students are facing off with Dedan Kimathi University at the finals of Kenya Mechatronics competitions at Kimathi University in Nyeri. 

The three institutions are going for the top three positions on the final day of the WorldSkills Kenya Mechatronics competitions. 

KIST team of Victoria Wanjiku and Disrael Ngeresa and Kennedy Munene and Margret Wanjiku from Masinga TVC qualified to the finals after edging out Philip Misikho and Furqan Hashim of North Eastern National Polytechnic and other students from Katine TTI in the TVET category of the competition yesterday.

While the team of Elsie Makara and Maxwell Magoi and that of Audrey Nzilani and Joanna Oluoch from the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology preceded to finals after outshining their college mates Edwin Ngari and Brian Mwangi at the university category.

Earlier, ten TVET colleges and universities of technology had proceeded to stage two of the WSK Mechatronics competition 

The Six TVET institutions squared out on day two of the WorldSkills Kenya Mechatronics pilot competitions taking place at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology after seven others bowed out during the grueling day-long battle to remain in the race.

The competition was officially opened yesterday by Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) Director-General Dr. Kipkirui Langat and is expected to continue until Friday when the winners of the pilot will be announced.

Mechatronics Engineering revolves around building automated systems for industry using mechanics, electronics and pneumatics augmented with computer technology.

In yesterday’s event, teams of two students from 10 TVET institutions and seven Technical Universities took part in the first stage of the competition. When a team of trained judges announced the results late evening, teams from four TVET institutions and three from the Technical universities were edged out on points.
