Zetech VC tells graduates to marry skills with technology to succeed

Zetech University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Njenga Munene has told students and graduates that skills without technology will put them at a disadvantage, asking them to be innovative with relevant technology that will give them a competitive edge in the job market.

Addressing the congregation during a graduation ceremony at the university’s Ruiru campus, he told the 1,786 graduands to apply their soft skills in their areas of specialization and create a network of relevant people in order to succeed.

“Soft skills go beyond technical skills and we must endeavour to be techno-preneurial because there’s a wide application of technology in almost all areas,” he said

“As a university we have already established an entrepreneurial ecosystem incubation hub which helps us incubate students’ business ideas and innovations and later graduate them to industrial parks. Again we have introduced entrepreneurship as a unit for all Zetech learners to equip them with relevant skills that they can apply to establish their own income-generating ventures,” he added.

Noting that it won’t be a bed of roses after graduation, Munene told them that they should face challenges and have a positive attitude to overcome them in order to be successful.

The VC noted that the university has invested immense resources in advancing ICT training as well as nurturing innovations.

At the same time, the VC noted that the university’s first Masters Programme was informed by the high demand of the programme.

He said that the MBA covers six thematic areas, including Strategic Management, Procurement and Logistics, Human Resource Management, Business  Intelligence and Analysis, Finance and Investment, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

“We are committed to delivering a quality programme to our students. We have entered into partnership with various industry players who will give our students industrial exposure as they study. This will ensure that we produce competent and innovative leaders in their respective fields,” Munene said.

Deputy VC Dr Alice Njuguna said that the institution has adopted a realistic strategic plan that will guide the university towards the leading edge in academic and research excellence.

“We want our graduates to be resourceful and live in integrity so that they can be a problem solving lot to make meaningful contributions to the community and the country at large. We are training job creators not job seekers,” she said.

These sentiments were echoed by Dennis Oketch, the principal in charge of Tricent Medical College, who observed that emerging technologies are shaping the future and urged the youth to seek to be equipped to participate in the digital economy.
