Zetech University has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Nyumba Kumi officials, local administration officers, and community leaders to effectively address the escalating crime rates in their region.

The program, conducted at the University’s Mang’u campus in Witeithie ward, Juja sub-county, spans two days and encompasses diverse training modules in leadership and development, conflict resolution, community policing, and customer service excellence.

The Dean of School of Education, Arts, and Social Sciences at Zetech University, Prof.  Owen Ngumi emphasized the critical role that Nyumba Kumi officials play in community policing.

He underscored the importance of equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to combat various crimes and illicit activities such as liquor brewing, trafficking of narcotics, and other security challenges.

“The training program represents a significant milestone in fortifying security within the area. It not only empowers local leaders but also ensures that students within the region can live and study in a secure environment,” the Dean stated.

In addition, he noted that the University is actively involved in several initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of the local population.

“These initiatives include training programs for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), supporting boda boda operators, and offering short courses to youth groups,” Prof. Ngumi said.

The Assistant County Commissioner of Witeithie Division Cecilia Mbugua, , highlighted the importance of the training in combating the rising crime rates, particularly in Witeithie, a peri-urban estate known for various criminal activities, including robberies, house break-ins, and muggings.

She urged residents to embrace the Nyumba Kumi and community policing strategies, emphasizing their effectiveness in reducing crimes within the area.

Moreover, Mbugua issued a warning to parents in Kiahuria location regarding the presence of hyenas in the villages and urged them not to send their children to shops after dark, taking steps to ensure their safety.

She further pointed out that the local authorities have engaged the Kenya Wildlife Service officers to address the issue and have set traps to capture the marauding hyenas.

Kiahuria Chief Joseph Wainaina is also taking proactive steps by collaborating with local school heads to prevent potential attacks by the hyenas.

Nyumba Kumi officials who have undergone the training expressed their enthusiasm and noted that the program had significantly broadened their understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

They are eager to put their newfound skills into practice to improve the administration of clusters in the sub-county.

Professor Ngumi cautioned students residing in Witeithie estate against engaging in illegal activities, emphasizing the negative impact such actions can have on their studies and future careers.
