Youths across the country have been encouraged to enrol in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to acquire practical skills needed in the job market.

Eldoret Polytechnic Registrar Solomon Killi emphasised the growing importance of technical training, noting that anyone can join TVET institutions regardless of their academic grades.

Speaking during an outreach event in Nandi County, Killi said the government has made provisions for student loans to support those enrolling in TVET, making the programs more accessible.

“Technical skills are increasingly in demand, and TVET offers a chance for young people to become self-reliant. Financial constraints should not be a barrier, as funding is available through government allocations,” said Killi.

He noted that registration is currently ongoing at Eldoret Polytechnic and encouraged young people to visit the institution to explore the available courses.

Killi also highlighted the institution’s adoption of Competency-Based Education (CBE), reaffirming their commitment to providing quality and industry-relevant training.

“We are focused on equipping students with skills that match the needs of the job market. Our programs are tailored to ensure learners are not only trained but also ready for employment or self-employment,” he added.

In recent years, there’s been a noticeable trend in Kenya of university-eligible students choosing to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs instead of traditional university degrees; factors like changing job market demands drive a shift, reduced TVET tuition fees, and the availability of higher education loans for TVET students.

In 2022, the KUCCPS data showed a dip in university enrolment, from 452,089 to 448,482, as the number of TVET increased from 217,440 to 265,095. In contrast, the 2023 TVET records stood at 367,925, with 54.6 per cent (200,893) of the students being men and 45.4 per cent (167,032) being women.
