Youthful Nairobi businessman gives back by combating school dropout through sports

A young Nairobi-based businessman Brian Bulinda is on a mission to combat the alarming school dropout rates in Isukha South Ward, Shinyalu Constituency.

This he aims to achieve by establishing a sports academy aimed at empowering local youth as one way of giving back to his community.

The first step was to launch a ‘Tsunami United Tournament’, which took place at St Charles Shihuli Comprehensive School grounds.

During the finals of the tournament designed to engage young people throughout the August holidays, Bulinda expressed his deep concern about the rising number of school dropouts, attributing it to drug and alcohol abuse.

He believes that sports can serve as a vital tool for rehabilitating troubled youth and transform them into constructive members of society, urging the government to bolster funding for primary school sports programmes to lay a solid foundation for talent and artistry growth from an early age.

His vision is to mentor students under the age of 20, guiding them towards educational opportunities in schools and polytechnics. He also commended Shanderema Secondary School for welcoming many young footballers from Tsunami United Soccer Club.

Soccer legend Josphat Murila, a former AFC Leopards and Harrambee Stars player in the ’70s and ’80s, praised Bulinda’s initiative, promising to scout for standout talent among the young players and offering them pathways for greater exposure.

“I want to express my gratitude to Bulinda and his team for their plans to support the youth, aligning perfectly with the government’s blueprint to identify and nurture talent. This initiative empowers young people to thrive and create sustainable livelihoods,” said Murila, who was known as Controller in his hey-day.

He encouraged the youngsters to focus on building their character as a foundation for a brighter future.

Other notable attendees included head teacher of St Charles Shihuli Comprehensive School Godfrey Akala, Casper Mumia from St Paul’s Shibuye Primary School, and renowned soccer coach Davis Ingoi.

Together, they are laying the groundwork for a brighter future through sports and education.
