Nyamira County Governor, Amos Nyaribo, has appealed to the youth to involve themselves in important activities like sports instead of indulging in drug abuse and other related vices during the April holiday.

The governor said that sports like soccer and athletics provide many opportunities for both physical and mental development to the youth as they socialize.

“All these development growth are complementary to one another and there is need for our youths to embrace them,” he said.

The governor was speaking at Nyamira town when he launched the Nyamira Great Run on Thursday.

He thanked the organizers led by the County Minister for sports Grace Nyamongo for planning the event, saying that it will revive talents in the youth.

“The region has produced great athletes like Naftal Temu Nyamao and Nyantika Maiyoro in the earlier years who proved that one can earn a living through athletics,” he said.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyanza Region’s Peter Angwenyi, the 21 kilometre race will start at Chepilat and end at Ikonge Primary School at the Bomet-Nyamira border.

Angwenyi said that the registration fees for participants that will take place on Sunday will be Ksh 1,000 for both Senior and Junior men and women runners

Winners will pocket Ksh 25,000 while those who will take position two and three will be awarded with Ksh 200,000 and 150,000 respectively.

The chairman asked well-wishers to turn up in big numbers to support the event and expressed optimism of its continuation and success in the following editions.

“We intend to make the race an annual event to boost sports in the region I therefore call all leaders in the county and outside to support us,” he said.

He appealed to Games Departments from various schools to encourage their students to register as groups hinting that registration fees for schools might be reduced.
