Youth urged to embrace the digital space for education, empowerment

The youth have been asked to embrace the digital space to access education as well as seek and create job opportunities in the digital economy.

Speaking while launching a Jitume Lab at Kapcherop Training and Vocational Center (TVC) in Marakwet West, ICT and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eliud Owalo said that the digital space is the new frontier that will empower the youth.

The CS said that the government is committed to expanding internet connectivity across the country to enable the youth to utilize the digital space to create job opportunities.

“We are launching a digital highway which entails hundred thousand kilometres of fibre internet connectivity. This is the only way to create job opportunities for the youth. There are no more white collar jobs, we will open the world to the youth through internet connectivity,” he said.

Owalo said the Jitume Labs initiative aims at connecting public places including learning institutions and markets with the internet in a bid to provide education access to the youth.

His sentiments were echoed by ICT Permanent Secretary John Tanui who added that all TVET institutions countrywide will be connected to aid training and allow the youth gain digital skills.

“Access to the internet will enable you to advance your education and gain digital skills. We want to assure the youth that job opportunities are available,” he remarked.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich asked the youth to capitalize on the digital economy saying the devolved unit has set aside land for building a digital park.
