Youth who have gone through institutions of higher learning have been urged to embrace innovation and technology in a bid to enhance sustainable development.
Speaking during the 12th graduation ceremony of Meru University of Science and Technology, representative of Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba, Dr Esther Muoria, who is TVET Principal Secretary (PS), said there is need to support transformative change in the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning as this is revolutionizing education and making it more interactive.
He said though ICT has a tremendous advantage in preparing students for a rapidly evolving job market, it also presents challenges such as infrastructure and digital traffic where some regions are still lacking reliable access to the internet.

He said there is need for comprehensive digital training for both students and educators, noting that the government is actively looking into it.
“I urge universities like Meru to focus their research efforts on areas that align with national development goals,” he said, acknowledging that there is often a gap between academic research and industry links and strengthening these partnerships will require enhanced dialogue, funding and collaborations.
The CS said the government is actively working on enhancing research capacities in all the universities in the country in order to foster innovation.
“Keeping up with the rapid picture of technological advancement and workforce requires constant evolution which can sometimes create disruptions. However, these reforms are essential for preparing graduands with future skills, critical thinking, adaptability and innovation, which are key,” said the CS.
The university’s Vice Chancellor Professor Romanus Odhiambo called on the graduands to think locally but have a global perspective in order to face the challenges out there and transform the world.
“You are our ambassadors out there and I advise you to take with you the values of honesty, transformation and professionalism, among others that we have instilled in you as your driving force wherever you go,” said Professor Odhiambo.
