Bishop Joseph Mairura of Kisii Catholic Diocese has implored youth to shun drug, substance and alcohol abuse to live healthy lives.
The bishop noted that the substances interfere with their minds and overall cognitive functioning, ruining both their education and their lives.
“Bhang and chang’aa hamper reasoning and create confusion in the brain,” Bishop Mairura said, addressing youth at Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho during their annual Diocesan Youth Mass.
He said alcohol has an element of spirit, which destabilizes users, affecting their lives and urged them not to keep bad company.

Bishop Mairura, accompanied by Vicar General Charles Motari, several priests and nuns, said that youth have the potential to succeed in their education if they work hard.
“Every child has a potential to succeed. I urge you to work hard and be focussed,” Bishop Mairura said.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 children from disadvantaged families in Bassi Chache Ward, Bobasi Constituency in Kisii County have been awarded Ksh4 million bursary.
Area MCA John Sambo said beneficiaries were from form two to four.
“We are going to disburse Ksh1 million to form one students and learners in technical and vocational centres,” Sambo said at Gesture Secondary School after he released the cheques to beneficiaries.
He said only orphans and students from poor families will benefit and challenged them to take advantage of the bursary to excel in their education.
Last week, Governor Simba Arati disbursed Ksh167 million as county bursaries to more than 60,000 form two, three and four students.
He is set to disburse a total of Ksh245 million up from Ksh135 million previously, each of the county’s 45 Wards being allocated Ksh5 million up from Ksh3 million.
