The 96th edition of the Kenya Music and Cultural Festival is currently underway at Wote Technical Training Institute (TTI), scheduled to run until Saturday, 9 2023.

This vibrant event has drawn participants from approximately 30 counties, each presenting a diverse array of cultural items.

Dr. Ummi Bashir, the Chief Guest and PS for Culture and Heritage, officially inaugurated the festival, emphasizing the significance of preserving traditional music, drama, and dance.

She expressed delight in witnessing the active involvement of both youths and students from the public, underscoring their crucial role in safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage.

Dr. Bashir pledged the national government’s commitment to collaborate with counties, recognizing the importance of collective efforts in preserving culture amidst the devolved governance system.

She urged youths to view the festival not merely as a competition but as a platform to elevate cultural expression.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior echoed the sentiment of unity among counties, envisioning a collective effort to elevate Kenyan culture to new heights.

He highlighted Makueni’s abundant tourist attractions and advocated for the return of the Tsavo man-eaters’ heads as part of UNESCO’s artifact collection initiative.

Professor Emily Akuno, representing the Kenya Music Cultural Festival (KMCF), commended the host principal, Joshua Munywoki, for his exemplary leadership at Wote TTI.

She highlighted the festival’s diverse components, with eight adjudicators and eight exhibition centres showcasing various cultural products.

In emphasizing the value of culture and art, Professor Akuno noted that these expressive forms contribute to building dignity, discipline, and diversity.

Kiprop Lagat, the National Director of Culture, reaffirmed the national government’s support for such events, advocating for the embrace of culture and collaboration with partners to meet international standards.

The festival, a celebration of Kenya’s rich cultural tapestry, promises to be a melting pot of creativity, tradition, and unity, fostering a deeper appreciation for the nation’s heritage.
