Worry over rising child abuse cases in Kisii, Nyamira

Parents from Nyamira County have been asked to take care of their children at all times to curb the rising cases of child abuse and disappearances in the area.

Nyamira County Police Commander James Mitugo decried the high rate of kidnapping, child abuse and gender violence but assured residents of the government’s security.

He said that majority of the victims met their kidnappers either when alone travelling home from school or when they are left unsupervised.

“Encourage your children to walk in groups at all times to avoid inhumane individuals,” he said.

He asked parents to teach their children to resist offers from strangers.

The Police boss was speaking at Kemera location in Manga sub-county when he launched investigations on the death of a two-year old boy.

According to villagers the boy was snatched from home by strangers and was found dead two days later with his body dumped in a river.

The body was removed to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

According to Human Rights Officer Douglas Bosire, Kisii and Nyamira counties registered 6,934 and 3,150 teenage pregnancy cases respectively.

He noted that Bomachoge Borabu sub-county in Kisii County led in gender violence cases while Manga and Nyamira North sub-counties lead in gender violence and asked for a probe to curb the vice.

Bosire appealed to the community to embrace societal decorum and control some of the possible avenues which expose children to vices.
