Worry mounts as another school dormitory burns in Kisii

Kisii County Director of Education (CDE) Philip Chirchir has appealed to Principals and staff to remain vigilant amid rising fire incidences in area schools after a dormitory at St. Mary’s Nyangoge Secondary School was razed to ashes on Wednesday.

“We have confirmed the burning of the school dormitory but at this time we cannot estimate the cost of damage as the students and teachers are yet to recover from the shock,” he said.

He thanked the county Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Chairperson Mrs. Joyce Orioki and Catholic Schools Secretary Christopher Osinde, who were among the first people to visit the school to console the more than 80 girls who spent the night in the cold.

They donated mattresses, blankets and other personal items for the affected students to enable them to continue their education.

School Chief Principal Mrs. Teresa Gesare thanked her colleagues for the gesture and assured parents of their children’s safety.

“I thank God that you have come on time. I am happy to report that none of our students was hurt although they lost everything to the fire,” she said.

Mrs. Gesare appealed to other well-wishers to visit the school and provide the girls with psychological, material and spiritual support.

The fire incident comes weeks after Riokindo Girls’ School lost one dormitory to a mysterious fire.

Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kesses confirmed the incident and said that his officers had started investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
