The parents of Machongo Secondary School in Bomachoge Chache Constituency in Kisii County are deeply concerned over the ongoing heavy rainfall, which has ushered in the ominous El Nino, which has taken a toll on the school, resulting in a mild landslide.

The Chairman of the school’s Board of Management (BOM), Onderi Mogoi noted that a multi-story building accommodating more than seven classrooms, teeters on the brink of disaster.

“This imminent threat is aggravated by the building’s proximity to a road whose foundations have been weakened by the activities of road excavators as the compromised ground stability paves the way for the looming danger of a mass landslide, putting the entire school community in jeopardy,” the Chairman stated.

Another board member Nyamweya also underscored the vulnerability of the school due to its location below a steep hill.

Consequently, the area Member of Parliament, Alpha Miruka allocated emergency funds from his NG-CDF office.

“These funds are crucial for the construction of protective terraces around the school and the reinforcement of existing walls with additional pillars to ensure that the school can withstand the destructive forces that loom with the impending El Nino,” Miruka mentioned.

Additionally, the School Principal Richard Nyabayo called upon local leaders to rally around the school, safeguarding it from external threats, particularly the heavy rain that could jeopardize its continued development.
