World Bank: Hunger main cause of poor concentration among learners

A World Bank report has revealed that low learning outcomes in schools is linked to hunger and poor nutrition.

The Africa Pulse Report 2024 found that 70 percent of learners in sub-Saharan Africa cannot concentrate in class as a result of hunger.

It noted that 90 percent of 10-year olds in Kenya cannot read and comprehend a simple text due to inadequate intake of food and nutritious diets.

The report intimated that continued drought and flooding in some areas of the country have largely contributed to the hunger situation among most school-going children.

The Integrated Phase Classification for Acute Malnutrition (IPC-AMN) report of 2022 also shows that the nutrition situation in Kenya had deteriorated compared to 2021.

It also disclosed that the number of school going children who require treatment for acute malnutrition rose by15.6 percent from cases reported in 2021.
