Kisii Woman Rep launches 3 boreholes to tackle water scarcity in schools

Kisii Woman Rep Dorice Donya during the commissioning of the borehole at Tabaka Ward South Mugirango Kisii County

Kisii County Woman Representative Dorice Donya has inaugurated three boreholes in Tabaka, Masimba and Magena to address the pressing water scarcity in the region.

Speaking during the commissioning of the water sources in Tabaka, South Mugirango, Donya emphasized the paramount importance of the boreholes in providing clean water for domestic use, effectively addressing the chronic water shortage plaguing the area.

She said that these boreholes are set to alleviate the considerable burden that women and schoolchildren have faced for years, as they previously had to embark on long and strenuous journeys to access clean water.

Donya further highlighted that during drought seasons, incidents of rape, underage pregnancies and defilement were rampant due to the necessity for girls and women to trek long distances in search of water.

Additionally, she said that the boreholes were made possible through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), recognizing the urgent need for accessible clean water in Kisii and its schools.

Donya firmly believed that the provision of water in schools would not only retain students in the classrooms but also enhance their academic performance by allowing them to concentrate on their studies.

Member of County Assembly of Tabaka Jimmy Kenyanya emphasized that these boreholes would not only benefit students but also serve the local communities, providing water even to nearby markets through pipelines, thereby eliminating the need for pupils to carry water containers to school.

Donya further promised the community to drill more boreholes in the remaining six constituencies and appealed to the National Government for solutions to water storage issues, especially during the rainy season, as this had been a persistent challenge for many households.
