Bungoma County Women Representative in the National Assembly Hon. Catherine Wambilianga has assured that her office will support teenage mothers get access to education.

The one time teacher unionist affirmed that the mothers will go through guidance and counseling before they are taken back to school.

Addressing Journalists in Bungoma, Wambilianga expressed her worries about the high number of teenage girls who dropped out of school due to early pregnancy where she said that her office will support them and ensure that they go back to school to get education.

“I do not want to see teenage girls move from Bungoma to Nairobi seeking house-help jobs. I want to empower the young generation. They are the ones who will take over from us when we get old,” she added, pointing out that boy child should be supported as well.

She appealed to parents to try and apply bursaries and scholarship opportunities to ensure that learners are in school.

“My office also has a bursary slot for needy but bright students from Bungoma. I therefore ask them to apply for them,” she said.

She added that there are many scholarships in the country urging University students to apply for them.

Wambilianga asked the Education PS Simeon Nabukwesi to help students and guide them on how to apply for scholarships to ensure that a good number of students from Bungoma county and western region at large get scholarships.

“Please PS Nabukwesi as I struggle down here to ensure that our own students are getting bursaries and scholarships, also help us at the top there to ensure that students benefit fully to ensure that Bungoma does not lack professionals in future,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Prof. Anne Nangulu, a professional in Bungoma County who was at the press meeting, asked those who completed form four examinations and failed to attain direct entry grades to join TVET institutions to get technical knowledge that will help them get self-employed.

“Do not see that you are a failure, what you need to do is join any technical institute near you and get knowledge or you can as well reach me for further advice,” she said.
