Women Caucus woo Gov’t to allocate resources to CBOs promoting education initiatives

Women Caucus of Kenya have asked both the National and County Governments to put aside more money for funding groups that help in the grassroots mobilization and sensitization on the importance of empowering vulnerable girls in society through education.

Saying that education is the only best equalizer of all people, Kakamega branch Chairman Lucy Jogoo poured many accolades to Community Based groups that play important roles like supporting and empowering the girls children most of them from broken and poor families, Gender Based Violence(GBV) victims and teenage mothers.

“Assisting them to acquire skills and empowering them financially to start their own profitable businesses is the best entry point to their redemption.” She said.

She was addressing the public at Kisii town on July, 29 during the launch and graduation ceremony of Global Talanta Organization that was founded by the Nyanza Region Girl Guide Commissioner Catherine Kemunto Amaya.

Jogoo urged the girl guide to be in the forefront in Championing peace in the country because without it development will not be attainable adding that when the peace of any country is interrupted it is children and women who suffer most through hunger and rape and other social vices and asked women to be in the lead in preventing any unrests in the country.

The occasion was graced by many local leaders from Kisii and the neighboring counties of Homabay Narok and Kakamega.

Those from Narok were led by Narok branch Women Caucus Chairman Peninah Tauta, who affirmed that her county will partner with Kisii and Kakamega in the supportive services aimed at empowering the girl child with education and skills to free her from the long held ousted beliefs and practices like FGM and early marriages that are meant to thwart her worth in the communities.

She briefed on the great strides that her group has made in Narok region by providing school children with sanitary towels to enable them remain in class consistently during their menstrual period to catch up lessons with their boys’ counterparts and asked other regions to borrow a leaf from them.

“We first started with table banking to empower ourselves and we are now stable with more than shillings 2 million in the bank and this has helped us to support those vulnerable groups in society.” She said.

The chairman said that her group has supported 2500 girls from Seven Schools in Narok County to remain in class and complete their studies successfully.

Dr.Purity Nasinya from Narok Women Caucus Group narrated her bitter and tearful childhood experiences when she was rescued by well-wishers from forced early marriage in her community and was taken to school where she continued with education and finally became a medical doctor and promised to champion the welfare of the girl child and battered women in society.

She asked all girls in communities to be conversant with their rights and all laws safeguarding them by frequenting the Chiefs’ and their Assistants’ offices to learn.

“These Chiefs’ offices in your locations are not only meant to host barazas for old men and women but they there to sensitize all people on the political social and economic trends in society.” She said.

Former Kisii County director of Culture and Children’s Services, Obino Nyambane asked groups to embrace important cultural practices like respect for life and peaceful coexistence among communities because they form the base of successful life.

During the meeting that was characterized with a lot of entertainment ranging from traditional, Christian songs and dramatized poetry dances, 75 candidates from GlobalTalanta Organization of Tendere location in Bomachoge Chache Constituency, graduated with certificates in hair dressing, tailoring and dress making, dairy and poultry keeping, bricks layering and masonry, sign language, computer literacy poetry and first aid.

Tabaka Ward MCA Jim Kenyenya who graced the colorful occasion and was flanked by his wife, promised to propose a motion in the Kisii County Assembly to provide more social and economic protection to the vulnerable groups like the orphaned children, elderly people and the gender based violence victims in the region.

He thanked the media groups like the area vernacular Etaya TV and Education News Paper for their exclusive coverage of the grass root news and asked other media houses to copy them.

“You are great people in your work which is balanced as you inform educate and entertain us.” He said
