Woman whose star lit up athletic tracks in 1960-70s, dims with strong legacy

Margaret Muhalya was the athletic track star who had lightning speed.

By mentioning Margaret Muhalya in the 60s and 70s, athletics fans at the old Sixty Four stadium and Kamariny waited intently to witness her fast and strong strides of a highly professional short races runner.

Margaret was born in the early 1950s to Mr and Mrs Samson Shitakhwa, county officers in Uasin Gishu.

From the time she set foot on the track, she lived a brilliant life marked by passion, dedication, and undeniable talent in captivating short races.

Margaret immensely captivated all her fans, mostly at the Old 64 stadium in Eldoret, with her exceptional sprints in 100 and 200 metres at lightning speed. She wasn’t just an ordinary performer but a true entertainer and an inspiration.

Margaret is remembered for her breathtaking sprints and unwavering determination, which enabled her to win 10.5 seconds and 21 records in 100 and 200 metres, respectively. These records stand out as a testament to her talent and determination.

Many fans were thrilled by her countless victories in Eldoret and nationwide, scooping District, Provincial, and National athletics awards. She was a role model for aspiring athletes, proving that with dedication and talent, the sky is the limit.

She was kind, generous and humble. She received her training at the Government Training Institute as an executive officer, where she served with dedication in the Ministry of Lands and Housing before enrolling in Theological Studies at the International Christian Ministries(ICM). She successfully qualified in Pastoral Studies.

Though her time with us has ended, her legacy will continue to live through the memories we share and the real inspiration she gave.

She is gracefully survived by 13 children,64 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
