Woman Rep calls for harmonization of bursary funds to curb duplication

Meru Woman Representative Elizabeth Kailemia has called for the harmonization of bursary funds in a bid to end duplication of the benefiting students.

Kailemia now wants centralization of data for those being funded by MCAs, governors and MPs to ensure that nobody benefits twice at the expense of other needy cases in addition to opening up the funds to more beneficiaries.

“There is a big number of students who need bursaries in the county and the centralized data will help to regulate them from getting from more than one source. We don’t expect any child in Meru to be at home due to lack of fees because every needy child is entitled to a bursary to keep him or her in school,” said Kailemia.

She regretted that the duplication of bursaries has left many needy students lacking even a single cent from the kitty forcing many students to skip school due to lack of fees.

The Woman MP said chiefs and school heads should be involved in the exercise since they are aware of the most deserving cases.

“This will also ensure that there is 100% transition from the primary to secondary school as directed by the president,” she added.

She appealed to the government to increase the amount of bursary funds given to Woman Representatives across the country noting they do not meet their targets as many students need help especially during tough economic times.

Expressing similar sentiments, Municipality ward MCA Caleb Mutethia said they can reach out to a bigger number if all elected leaders sit together and have a common target of those to benefit.
