Winners of Kisumu’s back-to-school tournament to be rewarded handsomely

Winners of the inaugural ‘Back to School’ soccer tournament in Kisumu will be awarded educational materials, bursaries and scholarships, area Senator that Professor Tom Ojienda has announced.

Prof Ojienda said the objective of the tournament, which took place over the festive season in Muhoroni and Chemelil, was to nurture talent among youth.

The Senator said sports are important and need to be supported.

 

“We have the social responsibility to grow talent in this part of the country. Let’s nurture and support our talented youth,” he said.

The Senator said leaders must support sporting activities at the community level, calling for the establishment of sports academies in the county.

“We should have youth academies that grow talent amongst our youth in the region,” Prof Ojienda said.

“As leaders, we have the social responsibility to grow sports in the county. Sports is a well-paying sector which must be fully exploited to increase earnings among our young people,” he added.

 

The tournament, themed along environmental conservation, education empowerment and gender-based violence advocacy, attracted 20 teams (for both boys and girls) in the preliminary stages.

The participants were drawn from Muhoroni, Seme, Kisumu Central, Kisumu East, Nyando, Kisumu West and Nyakach sub-counties in Kisumu.

Chemelil Youth beat Bayern Academy 1-0 in the boys’ final to win the under 17 tournament.

In the girls’ final, Kopere Starlets beat Manyatta Queens 2-1.
