Residents of Mrima wa Ndege have been forced to withdraw pupils from schools in Ganze, Kilifi County due to increased human-wildlife conflict.
They said they were forced to withdraw their children from school for fear of attacks by marauding elephants and lions from Tsavo East National Park.
Led by the area MP Teddy Mwambire they called on the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to take immediate action against a herd of elephants and lions that have sparked human-wildlife conflict in the area.
The MP expressed concern that the invasion by wild animals will negatively impact on learning if not contained.
The area Chief Samson Chai said learning in schools has been interfered with for the past one month since the lions invaded the village.
He said school going children are forced to arrive at schools late and leave for home early for fear of being attacked by lions which have already killed six cows and six goats.
Mwambire lamented that the area has continued to suffer the brunt of wildlife menace, especially from elephants and called upon the Government to come up with workable solutions to the ‘chronic and volatile’ problem.
He said learning disruption at the local schools in this area will contribute to poor performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams this year.
