Why teachers should accommodate intersex children in our schools

Intersex learners are indeed present in schools, although they might not always be visible or identified as such. It’s estimated that intersex individuals make up around 1.7% of the global population, which translates to approximately 1 in every 2-3 classrooms having an intersex student. These students may face unique challenges, which include direct discrimination, bullying, or harassment due to their sex characteristics or gender expression.

Schools often lack inclusive policies, curricula, and support systems for intersex students, leading to feelings of isolation and exclusion among such learners.

The students may struggle with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues due to stigma, shame, or lack of understanding.

To support such learners, schools can take several steps by Integrating intersex issues and positive representations into sex education and health classes, promoting understanding and acceptance.

Fostering a school culture that values diversity, inclusivity, and respect for all students, regardless of their sex characteristics or gender identity.
