Competency-Based Education (CBE) is a transformative approach to learning that focuses on students’ demonstration of specific skills, knowledge, and attitudes, rather than traditional age or grade-level progression.
Teachers have to realize that over reliance on the retooling exercise by the government is likely to scuttle the success of the new curriculum.
They have to take the lead in putting in place appropriate initiatives at individual, school and collectively to complement government’s efforts
In Kenya, CBE has been adopted to enhance the quality of education and equip learners with the competencies required to succeed in the 21st century. This approach emphasizes mastery learning, where students progress through levels of proficiency at their own pace, ensuring that they have fully grasped the concepts before moving forward.
By emphasizing real-world application and critical thinking, CBE prepares learners to tackle complex challenges and adapt to an ever-changing global landscape.

Teachers have no other option but to acquire new skills from colleague experts in case of difficulty through various methods:
Schools should identify experienced colleagues who can guide and support other teachers in developing new skills in order to make the new system succeed.
Additionally it’s the role of subject panels to observe colleagues teaching and learning strategies, and discuss the effectiveness of different approaches.
Old rigidity and know all mentality has to be completely discouraged and as such, administrators should encourage teachers to work with colleagues to plan lessons, share ideas, and develop new teaching strategies that would have an immense impact on the learning process.
Staff members should be encouraged to focus more on professional gains rather than monetary gains by attending workshops, training sessions, or conferences where colleague experts share their expertise.
Every teacher has to learn to embrace his/her limitations and be open to receiving coaching from experienced colleagues or external experts to develop specific skills.
