Why recruitment trends by TSC should inform career choices

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia at the recent KEPSHA conference. TSC varies prioritization of subjects in its recruitment policy every year, and so KCSE candidates must be aware of the trends as they choose careers.

The month of November was greeted with joy by unsuccessful applicants in the October recruitment by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The news of a further recruitment of 20,000 interns greatly helped to resuscitate dwindling hopes of a future absorption by TSC.

After battling with online applications, applicants were to be met by the reality that the November exercise largely favoured Sciences against Humanities.

Technical subjects were for the first time given the second priority. In the score sheet seen by Education News, applicants with Biology/chemistry, Physics/Maths, and Biology/Agriculture combinations had an edge of 65 points to begin with.

Business/Maths, different combinations with Home Science and P.E, and Computer Studies/Maths followed with a starting mark of 40 marks. Languages had a starting score of 25 marks and lastly, Humanities had 5 marks as a starting score.

From this outlook, it is crystal clear that the recruitment is basically targeting Science  and technical subjects. Humanities and language teachers were largely given priority in the 2023 recruitment.

An in depth analysis across a number of counties reveals that there’s an urgent need for teacher trainees to focus on technical subjects. Subjects that are CBC-orientated like Music, Creative Arts, Metal Work, Home Science, Building and Technology received minimal applications.

One of the applicants who performed well in Home Science at ‘O’ Level but went for Kiswahili and History in the university blamed her parents for the miscue.

“My parents told me Home Science is not marketable yet I had scored a clean A,” quipped the applicant who sees no hope in the ongoing exercise.

With CBC gaining traction in our schools, it is incumbent upon career masters to effectively guide the students properly on choice of subjects going forward.
