As successful applicants from the recent rigorous Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment process continue visiting sub-county offices for final validation, calls for transparency have intensified.
Teachers’ unions and unsatisfied participants are up in arms, accusing the Commission of failing to uphold transparency by not displaying the merit lists after the document verification exercise.
“There can never be a fair process without a clear end. We want to be given a clear and satisfactory explanation of how those invited to fill the employment forms were selected,” a union official from Kisii County lamented.
A female teacher from Ainamoi in Kericho County echoed the dissatisfaction among affected teachers. She expressed frustration over watching her former pupils get employed while she remains jobless.
One Gertrude, a 44-year-old mother of four and Bomet’s Afritech Teachers College graduate said she is edging closer to retirement without ever being absorbed by TSC.

“When I went through the score sheet, I thought luck had finally knocked on my door, but I was left wondering if my years were confused with those of my former pupils,” said a teary Gertrude.
Education News contacted several sub-county offices across Western and Eastern regions to get their perspective.
Some panellists, speaking anonymously, revealed that certain applicants presented documents that did not meet the Commission’s employment threshold.
“Some teachers came with documents that didn’t match, yet they lacked affidavits to validate them,” stated a Sub-County Director from Western Kenya.
Despite efforts to absolve the Commission, top officials from both KNUT and KUPPET have raised red flags over the process.
“What makes the Commission so hesitant to make the merit lists available for scrutiny? That is part of the audit of the entire process,” questioned a KUPPET official from Kakamega County.
