What teachers will earn if employer gets SRC nod

By Staff Reporter

Kenya’s highest and lowest paid teacher will earn a monthly basic salary of Sh182,880 and Sh28,717 respectively at the fourth and final phase of the anticipated next cycle of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The salary hike, which will be subjected to negotiations between the Teachers Service Commission and teachers’ unions, will be spread across the four phases of the CBA as was the case in the first CBA.

The first CBA kicked off July 1st 2017 and ends June 30th 2021 and the Commission and teacher unions are expected to enter into fresh negotiations for the next cycle of the CBA (2021-2025).

Kenya National Union of Teachers has proposed a salary increase of 120 per cent for the lowest paid teacher and 200 per cent for the highest paid teacher.

But the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has argued that a salary hike of 30 per cent for the administrators and 70 per cent for the classroom teachers will suffice.

During a meeting with KUPPET in Naivasha last year, the Commission said any future salary increase for teachers will be pegged on a number of factors.

“The factors shall include affordability, sustainability, comparability, government fiscal policies and guidelines and teacher performance and productivity,” the Commission’s CEO Nancy Macharia said.

With the two unions’ salary expectations known, TSC proposes a 16 per cent rise for teachers at grades D5, D4, D3, D2, D1, C5 and C4. Teachers in grades C3, C2, C1, and B5 will be offered a rise of 32 per cent.

In case TSC holds sway, the highest paid Chief Principal at grade D5 and currently earning Sh157,656 as per the fourth and final phase of the 2017-2021 CBA will receive a Sh25,224 increase to be spread across the four phases of the CBA, taking the total to Sh182,880.

The lowest paid Chief Principal at grade D5 will earn Sh152,400 an improvement from the current Sh131,380 as indicated in the fourth phase of the current CBA.

A Principal and Deputy Principal I at grade D3 will receive a similar salary of Sh121,387, an improvement from the Sh104,644 they currently earn.

Secondary Teacher I/Lecturer I/SNE Teacher I-Primary/SNE Teacher II-Secondary and Senior Teacher at grade C3 will be the first batch of teachers to enjoy the highest pay hike of 32 per cent spread across the four phases of the CBA.

Once effected, the highest paid teacher in this category will pocket Sh71,204 up from Sh53,943 while the lowest will take home Sh56,963 compared to the current Sh43,943 per month.

  1. It’s interesting to learn that, there is a boost in teachers pay, however it’s unfortunate to realize that a teacher in C3 is bound to earn more than his/her administrator in C4 who is deputy headteacher or a headteacher in that scale,it therefore beats logic on who should administer who.

    1. TSC and SRC should factor educational achievement like Masters and PhD degrees at least to give value for education that they profess.

    1. Well I have read and have understood that teachers doesn’t really matter to the Kenya government. I have seen that politicians matter most, followed by civil servants. We and doctors are nothing in this country. Let’s just trust God to take care of us.

  2. The process should be expedited. Things can change before it’s noted someday in the payslips. I know comrades have started budgeting for the unhatched chicks…..
