As an examination official during the recently concluded KCSE, I observed the excitement and jubilation among the young students after completing their final paper.
Filled with the enthusiasm of newfound adulthood, they eagerly outlined plans for what they deemed a “cool life” – embracing forbidden escapades such as romantic encounters, experimenting with alcohol, partying, seeking financial support from sugar daddies, and more.
However, this perceived allure is akin to a toddler finding a venomous serpent cute.
These post-high schoolers, in the throes of adolescence, require substantial guidance to avoid potential pitfalls like unwanted pregnancies and the risk of HIV/AIDS.
The key lies in redirecting their energy toward constructive pursuits.
Engaging in talent ventures, from simple activities like bracelet-making and drawing to more complex endeavors such as coding and app creation can evolve into income-generating opportunities.
Learning new skills, like playing a musical instrument or attending computer classes, offers a positive alternative.
Participation in family businesses and assisting with household chores fosters responsibility.
Religious institutions play a crucial role by providing unwavering support to overwhelmed parents. Organizing workshops and seminars for Form Four leavers helps instill moral values, fortifying them against temptations.
The adage holds true – sin may seem enjoyable until the inevitable consequences are felt.
Conversely, parents and guardians should tread carefully, avoiding excessive pressure that might drive their children away.
Allowing room for socialization and staying informed about current trends can quell the fear of missing out (FOMO).
Striking a balance between guidance and freedom is essential in nurturing responsible and well-rounded individuals.
