Before any student matriculates into a particular university, it important to put some factors into consideration. Some of those factors include: Location of the university, cost of the course, availability of accommodation, accreditation of the course, university ranking, work-study programmes, scholarship opportunities, status, image and reputation of the institution. Ideally, students should consider those factors during their maiden application for courses, and during the revision process. Furthermore, they can re-consider their choices after placements.
Meaning, once the university placement results are out, Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) notifies the applicants about the transfers. This is for students who may wish to change their programmes and institutions through the online application systems. It must be done in strict adherence to the laid down procedures within specific timelines.
Actually, as a career educator in several schools, I can classify institutional transfers into two broad categories: One, there is the inter-institutional transfer. Then, two, there is the inter-and-intra-faculty transfer. Inter-institutional transfer means that a student moves from one university to the other. For instance, from the University of Nairobi (UoN) to Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).
Largely, the inter-institutional transfer entails the following steps: Firstly, the student initiates an online transfer application process, which will be submitted to the receiving institution. Secondly, the receiving institution endorses the application through their institution portal and accepts the student online. Thirdly, the releasing institution receives the application and releases the student online through the institutional portal.

Consequently, the endorsed application reverts to KUCCPS online for approval and a transfer letter is generated. Moreover, the applicant downloads the approved transfer letter and presents the same to the receiving institution for issuance of admission letter and joining instructions. Additionally, both the releasing and receiving institutions will obtain the transfer report in their institutional portal.
It is also instructive to note. Once a student has matriculated into a particular university, there is also the possibility of engaging in inter-and-intra-faculty transfers. For instance, a student who has been admitted in Maseno University, can engage in inter-faculty transfer by moving from the School of Medicine to the School of Education. By the same token, within the same School of Education, the student can explore intra-faculty transfer by changing from Bachelor of Education (Science) to Bachelor of Education (Arts). More importantly, during the processing of the Inter-faculty or Programme transfers, in degree programmes, universities are strictly advised to adhere to individual programme cut-off points and minimum subject requirements as pointed out by KUCCPS.
