The Ministry of Education (MoE) has been urged to fast-track the deployment of more teachers to the Western region to cater for the increasing student population in both public primary and secondary schools.
Speaking at Chwele Girls High School in Sirisia Constituency, Bungoma during a funds drive for the construction of a 2,500 students capacity dining hall, Western region legislators led by Mumias West MP Johnstone Naika asked Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) to ensure that more slots are allocated to the region by virtue of it producing the most teachers in the country.
The sentiments were echoed by Malava MP Malulu Injendi who is also the Deputy Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education.
On her part, the Vihiga County Woman MP Beatrice Adagala called on school girls to focus more on their studies and embrace discipline both at home and at school for a bright future.
Kimilili MP Didmus Wekesa Barasa proposed that all men who are found guilty of defiling young girls should be handed long sentences.
Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe said that the Ministry should always ensure that it disburses capitation funds commensurate to the number of learners in a given school just as it is in the distribution of books and other learning materials.
Area MP John Waluke noted that a total of Ksh24 million was raised with the Sirisia NG-CDF donatiing Ksh7 million.
Other dignitaries who graced the event included Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Moses Wetangula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
