West Pokot school running six-acre forest hungry to plant more trees

Pokot trees

A Principal in West Pokot is leading his teachers and learners to plant and tend to trees parked at the school’s six acre piece of land in a bid to mitigate the negative effects of climate change.

Mr. Barnabas Chirchir, who heads Talau School in West Pokot which comprises of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), primary and secondary school, is keen on curbing land degradation and mitigation of climate change effects in the community, which include insufficient rainfall, frequent droughts and lack of pasture.

He does it by revival of indigenous trees and protection of water sources.

As he teaches learners to tend to tree seedlings, he has shifted focus to establishing a larger seedbed for trees although inadequate and expensive resources have been a major setback.

Barnabas Chirchir sensitizes his pupils on tree planting. He is lauded for his passion in environmental conservation.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources however continues to provide the school with seedlings.

Chichir noted that the school’s tree planting initiative is a step towards complementing broader efforts by the government and other stakeholders to address myriad challenges brought about by climate change.
