West Pokot County has received an additional 627 digital learning gadgets to boost Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) initiatives, marking a significant step in the county’s drive to strengthen digital literacy at the foundational level.
The devices, delivered through a partnership between the County Government and the Education Innovation and Digital Learning (EIDU) program, will support ECDE learners with age‑appropriate, interactive content.
County Executive Committee Member for Education and Technical Training, Rebecca Kide, presided over the handover and said the investment is aimed at improving learning outcomes and equity. She emphasized that digital literacy is now essential in the classroom, helping bridge gaps, enhance engagement, and support teachers to deliver content more effectively. “Digital learning is a long‑term investment that will yield dividends in improved outcomes and greater equity,” she said.

With the latest consignment, the EIDU program now reaches 320 ECDE centres across seven wards in West Pokot, directly benefiting approximately 15,000 learners. Officials said the expansion addresses historical barriers to modern learning resources posed by geography, infrastructure, and economic constraints, positioning the county among those prioritizing early exposure to technology.
The gadgets are aligned with the country’s Competency‑Based Education (CBE) curriculum, embedding interactive lessons, storytelling, numeracy activities, and guided play to promote learning by doing. Education officers noted that the content is designed to meet national standards, moving beyond rote learning to build competencies such as creativity, problem‑solving, and communication.
Teachers in participating centres have undergone training and continue to receive support to integrate the devices into daily classroom activities. The capacity‑building component enables educators to track progress, personalize instruction, and identify areas needing reinforcement, ensuring technology complements rather than replaces the teacher’s role.
For many ECDE centres, the shift from traditional chalk‑and‑talk to learner‑centred digital approaches is transformative. Children now interact with visual and audio materials that improve comprehension and retention, while the tools support diverse learning styles and abilities. Parents and community leaders have welcomed the initiative, saying early exposure demystifies technology for children in rural and marginalized settings and helps narrow the digital divide with urban areas.

County officials praised the partnership with EIDU as a model for tackling systemic education challenges through shared planning and resources. They said the program contributes to broader national goals, including improved literacy and numeracy, enhanced teacher effectiveness, and Kenya’s digital transformation agenda, ensuring technology serves pedagogical aims rather than becoming an end in itself.
The County Government of West Pokot has expressed its sincere appreciation to the EIDU Program for its sustained support and commitment to early learning. Equally, the county has reaffirmed its pledge to safeguard the learning devices, support teachers, and ensure that the benefits of digital learning reach every intended learner.
This collaborative investment in early childhood education is a critical step toward nurturing digitally literate, confident, and competent learners. As West Pokot embraces technology at the foundation of learning, it lays the groundwork for a future generation equipped with the skills and resilience needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
