West Pokot leaders and residents have called on the government to put allocate more funds towards improving education standards by developing infrastructure in schools in remote areas.
Speaking at Lomut Primary school during the launch of the new school established by Sigor Constituency Development Fund (CDF) on June 3, area MP Peter Lochakapong and his Kapenguria counterpart Samuel Moroto called upon the Education Ministry to allocate more resources in schools along borders to ensure learners in the areas access education.
“We want equality in giving out funds. Many children drop out of school because of lack of facilities and hence migrate with their parents in search of pasture and water. This is one of the pastoral areas that were marginalized and we need more,” Lochakapong said.
At the same time, Lochakapong asked for more security officers to man the schools due to insecurity caused by bandits that recently saw Chesegon Technical Training Collage (TTC) closed.
Moroto decried that it was wrong for some areas to get the infrastructure funds but others become left out.
“When Lomut River overflows during heavy rains, children get difficulties crossing it. We prefer them to stay inside our borders but there is the challenge of food,” he said.
Philip Yarapong, a resident, said there is need to establish more schools to reduce the distance students travel to access studies.
