Tegla Loroupe is indeed a global athletics icon and a proud daughter of West Pokot. She is a seasoned competitor and has shown remarkable resilience.
While hosting the peace ambassador at his office, Governor Simon Kachapin thanked Loroupe for its leadership in supporting education and sports.
Kachapin advised that education and sports were powerful drivers of youth empowerment and directly affected community transformation.
He added that Loroupe was the first African Woman to break the marathon world record. The governor stated that Loroupe had exhibited consistent excellence, raising the flag of West Pokot and Kenya globally.

“She has played an important role in advocating for peace building, gender equality and inclusive education that has transformed people in Kenya and beyond to greater heights,” he stated.
The governor assured her he was ready to be a co-creator by deploying impactful, data-driven initiatives in partnership with like-minded stakeholders.
He added that by leveraging the power of sports and education and integrating inclusive policy, the county was building a future where every young person is expected to thrive and lead change in the entire community.
On her side, Loroupe said, “It’s my commitment to mentor and incubate youthful talent and expand equitable access to quality education to all people thirsting for knowledge.”
