Matulo F.Y.M Primary School in Webuye west sub county has been thrown into disarray after the Ministry of Public Works condemned more than 14 classrooms, declaring them structurally unsafe. The Ministry has issued the school with a one-month warning notice, directing that learners be moved out of the affected buildings immediately.
The condemned blocks include the Kikamweti Block, Middle Block, and Nursery Block, which collectively host a large number of pupils from early childhood to upper primary. Inspectors cited cracked walls, weak foundations, and collapsing roofs as major hazards. The Ministry cautioned that continued use of the buildings could put the lives of children and teachers at serious risk.
In the wake of the report, the School Board of Management (BOM) has appealed for urgent intervention. The BOM is calling on well-wishers, the county government, and the national government to provide support in the form of temporary structures, repairs, or the construction of new classrooms.

Without swift action, hundreds of learners could soon be forced into overcrowded alternatives or makeshift shelters, disrupting their education. The condemned blocks formed the core of daily teaching at Matulo, meaning the closure leaves the school with limited options to accommodate its pupils.
The BOM’s appeal highlights the growing pressure on local schools struggling with dilapidated infrastructure. Across the country, many public institutions face similar challenges, where aging buildings and limited resources compromise both safety and the learning environment. The situation at Matulo underscores the urgent need for investment in school facilities to prevent future crises.
With the clock ticking on the one-month deadline, all eyes are now on government authorities and the wider community to step in. The future of Matulo’s learners hinges on swift, coordinated action to restore safe classrooms and ensure that education continues without interruption.
