The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has said that the union will not condone the ongoing delocalization of teachers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), saying that the policy was abolished.

“Delocalization caused untold suffering to teachers countrywide. Unless it is by their choice, teachers should offer their services where they feel most comfortable. A delocalized teacher is not a happy teacher and that trickles down to poor performance by our students,” he said.

He was speaking during the KNUT Kitui branch 62nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Kitui Multipurpose Development Training Institute.

Oyuu called on TSC Officers to stop mistreating teachers and serve them with integrity and diligence.

The union boss issued a stern warning to male teachers who prey on schoolgirls, saying that the union will take punitive measures against any teacher found guilty of defiling learners.

“These are our children. A teacher must be a role model. The union will never defend any teacher found to defile our children,” he added.

Oyuu acknowledged and thanked the former Kitui county Governor Charity Ngilu for supporting teachers and gracing the event.

Ngilu said that teaching is a vital human resource that any country needs to develop, adding that what teachers were asking from the government was fair.

“Kenyan teachers are paid peanuts by the government despite them playing a very vital role in the country. All professionals including the engineers, doctors and lawyers have to go through the molding hands of teachers,” she said.

KNUT National Treasurer James Muuo Ndiku appreciated teachers for displaying solidarity especially during the teachers’ strike in the last week of August, saying that unity is their power.

Kitui Central MP Dr. Benson Makali Mulu, KNUT Kitui branch Executive Secretary Simon Mutunga Nding’o and Chairman Samuel Kathinuku, and the county KUPPET Executive Secretary Kioko Mutia addressed the occasion among other dignitaries.
