Thika Water and Sewerage Company (THIWASCO) has initiated a program geared towards assisting schools in the area tackle high congestion of learners.

The firm Managing Director Eng. Moses Kinya said that the program is part of the company’ s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) saying that they will be identifying and funding schools that are in dire need of more classrooms.

The MD spoke at Gatuanyaga Primary School in Thika East where he accompanied the Company’s Chairman Eng. Joseph Wakimani and other officials during the handing over of a newly built classroom funded by the firm.

“Some schools like this one are experiencing high population due to an increased enrolment of learners. As a way of giving back to the community that we serve we identified and funded this project that we go a long way in decongesting the school,” Kinya said.

The MD said that such projects will be conducted on need basis and after consultation with all stakeholders including the community.

“We will also be carrying out other projects geared towards alleviating some of the challenges the community is facing,” he said.

Kinya said that the firm will be collaborating with other stakeholders from Thika Constituency including area leadership in provision of crucial amenities that will support and promote education in the sub-county.

The MD noted that the water service provider has been keen on provision of the crucial commodity to schools within its catchment area including Mary Hills Girls High School, Thika Girls Karibaribi, Munyu Girls, St Pauls Boys, Chania Boys, Chania Girls, Thika Boys High school among other institutions.

“We have been going to the extent of hauling water to the schools with bowsers amid the water crisis that most parts of the country are facing. The company procured two water bowsers to transport the precious commodity to remote areas. Our schools can attest that they have been getting ample water despite the prolonged drought situation,” he said.

The school administration hailed the noble gesture by Thiwasco saying that the new classroom will assist in decongesting the school. The new classroom will be occupied by Grade six learners.

Thika MP, Alice Ng’ang’a, in a recent interview disclosed plans to put up more facilities including classrooms, laboratories and lavatories among others in schools within the constituency.

She said that the area National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) will factor a budget for the projects in the next financial year saying that the projects are pivotal in giving learners a conducive learning environment.

“We already have similar projects ongoing like construction of more classrooms and a laboratory at the newly established Jamuhuri secondary school. I am passionate about education and elevating its status in the constituency and I will ensure that the projects are fully implemented for the sake of our children,” the MP said.
