Watch your children closely during school holidays, Women-rep tells parents

Parents in Nyamira County have been asked to take care of their children and guide them during the April Holiday.

While speaking in Nyamira town, the area Woman Representative, Jerusah Momamyi said that the youth are curious in discovering new adventures like testing drugs and indulgence in premarital sex and therefore they should be guarded and counseled against the vices.

“This is the time when our teenage boys and girls find themselves in the world of unknowns and need our close supervision,” she said.

The County Member of Parliament decried the clandestine Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) going on in the county and reminded the community policing groups and clan elders to report the perpetrators to the police.

“Circumcision of the girl child is illegal in the country let those who practice it on our daughter know that their days are numbered,” she warned.

She cautioned parents against exposing their daughters to strangers and even close relatives who pretend to be friendly but ended up turning the girls into their sexual preys.

She decried the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the region and claimed that some of them are caused by teachers who are influencing teenage girl negatively.

“I have many cases reported of early pregnancies others are alleged responsibilities of teachers but remember if I prove that to be true you will stay and rot in prison,” she said.

Momanyi urged Churches and the community social workers to remain in the forefront towards safeguarding the lives of the girl child.
