Philanthropist and businessman Joseph Waswa has donated school uniforms to 2,800 needy learners in Misikhu and Bokoli wards of Webuye West, in a move aimed at enhancing access to education and boosting school retention.
The donation, facilitated through the Joseph Waswa Foundation, targeted pupils from Grade One to Grade Six, marking the first phase of a broader sub-county outreach programme.
The beneficiaries were drawn from vulnerable families, with education stakeholders describing the initiative as timely and transformative.
Addressing the press after the distribution exercise, Waswa, who also serves as the foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, said the programme reflects his commitment to giving back to the community, particularly by supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“This initiative is about restoring dignity and ensuring that no child is disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond their control. Education is the greatest equaliser, and as a community, we must step in to support our children,” he said.
Education officials noted that lack of proper school uniforms remains a significant barrier to consistent attendance in many rural schools. They observed that the donation would not only enhance learners’ confidence but also improve participation and academic focus.
Parents and guardians who attended the event expressed gratitude, saying the intervention had eased a heavy financial burden. Many acknowledged that purchasing uniforms for several school-going children has been a challenge amid tough economic times.
The foundation announced that the second phase of the initiative will be rolled out in Matulo and Sitikho wards, ensuring full coverage across the four wards of Webuye West Sub-County. In total, the school uniform programme targets more than 4,000 learners within the sub-county.
