Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has asked his political opponents to stop politicizing the scholarship kitty. After Wangamati launched the 2021 scholarship programme at Nzoia sugar grounds, a section of parents in Bungoma have come out accusing him for locking out bright students.
Speaking to the press today morning Wangamati refuted the story that had gone viral on social media on Dinah Nyaboke, a student who sat for her KCPE examination at Bungoma DEB primary school and scored 401 marks.
Wangamati distanced himself from the allegations of tribalism, saying that Dinah Nyaboke had been placed on special county bursary programme and her name appeared first on the Township ward list.
“This story going around on social media over allegations that Dinah missed out on governor’s scholarship is a total lie, I want to clear the air by saying that she is on my governor’s special bursary and her fees will be fully paid,” he said.
“The vetting committee had earlier on received information that Dinah’s mother is well off, that is why we decided to interrogate the matter before we decided what to do.
“The people who sent us information concerning Dinah’s family were wrong and after investigations Dinah has now been moved to full governor’s scholarship under my watch,” Wangamati stated, adding the student will be funded up to university level.
Wangamati urged parents from sub-counties where the launch has not been done to be patient and wait for the confirmation message from the Education department before they make any move. The Governor cited a case from Bumula constituency where the launch is not yet done yet one parent was complaining that her child has been locked out.
“The case from Bumula of a student, Vivian Wabwile, who had applied for the scholarship, has been addressed yet the parent had raised the alarm that the child had been left out,” the Governor said, adding: “Parents who are not sure if their children are on the list to contact the Education department before raising the alarm.”
